'To call it a day' means to finish your work or what you’re doing, this can be at the end of the day but doesn’t have to be, it just means you’re going to stop what you’re working on and carry on another day.
Let’s have a look at some examples:
Well we’ve made great progress on the garden I think we can call it a day, we can do some more tomorrow.
After 10 hours of laying down the foundations of the house, the builders called it a day.
It can also be something negative, and can mean to 'give up.'
