Hi everyone!

An awesome way to improve your fluency is by Speed Reading!

How does Speed Reading work?

You read and listen to a text, then read aloud and record yourself reading - then you listen to your recording and check for your mistakes then record yourself again and try to talk faster with less mistakes!

Here's today's text about a pub in Exeter saved by locals.

Things to look out for in this speed reading text.

Meaning

👉 The venue is the place where a concert or show happens.

👉 Closure is the noun for closing somewhere.

👉 A screeching halt means a sudden stop, screech is this sound a car makes when it stops very quickly and the tires screech along the road; imagine a car is going along the road and then suddenly has to stop.

👉 A shock to the system is an idiom which means something that has been difficult to accept, because somebody’s normal routine has been completely changed and it feels like a big change their body or mind (their system).

👉 Permanently means forever.

👉 Co- is the prefix we use which means half, in this case Pippa Wrag owns half of the pub, and somebody else owns the other half.

Pronunciation

👉 The word closure and co-owner begin with an O sound like in 'boat'.

👉 The word halt has the same sound as 'bolt'.

👉 The word dealt has an E sound the same as 'smell' or 'help'.

👉 The word venue sounds like 'new' at the end.
