Idiom-Monday #14 ...it's all well and good...

Writer's picture: Lucy @ DailyEnglishLucy @ DailyEnglish

Here's an idiom for you to try out this week in your daily speaking practice!

You say this phrase before acknowledging something good / useful that someone has done before then going on to say how something else they're doing / have done contradicts its benefit. For example, it may be a good thing that you have done x, but if you don't do y the result is going to be negative for you. It's almost used as a warning or criticism so be careful when using this - it is really only for family & friends informally.

It's always used with but as it highlights the contrast between the two statements that contradict each either.

Let’s have a look at some examples:

It's all well and good getting a gym membership, but when are you actually going to go for a workout?!
It's all well and good going to bed early before school tomorrow, but not if you just play video games all night.
