Writer's picture: Lucy @ DailyEnglishLucy @ DailyEnglish

Here's an idiom for you to try out this week in your daily speaking practice!

This phrase refers to failing or giving up at the very first stage of something (a task or project for example) - imagine a hurdle race (where you must jump over obstacles) and you fall over when you arrive at the first one so the event is over.

The idea could fall at the first hurdle if they fail to secure the investors approval.
The football team fell at the first hurdle when they were knocked out of the tournament in the opening game.
