Idiom-Monday #29 to be none the wiser

Writer's picture: Lucy @ DailyEnglishLucy @ DailyEnglish

Here's an idiom for you to try out this week in your daily speaking practice!

This phrase is brilliant as it's very British and is great for story telling!

It's an easy alternative to 'didn't know' but sometimes implies a situation where someone has been able to do something without people knowing, even though they should. For example, stealing some milk from your flatmate and carefully putting it back in the fridge without them knowing - they were none the wiser.

Note: always use with the verb 'to be' and almost always in the past tense -

I was none the wiser.

He was none the wiser.

They were none the wiser.

Let’s have a look at some examples:

I've read the computer manual, but I’m still none the wiser.
The health department gave the restaurant a warning, but the customers were none the wiser.
The children managed to sneak out after bedtime and climb back into bed before sunrise, their parents were none the wiser.
